Friday Five

  • Today is my three year anniversary at my current job. I took the day off to visit a university with my son.
  • I work with mainframe programmers. I am not a programmer. I do feel like I add value to the team. My current project is updating the very old documentation on a COBOL program that reads a bajillion tables to produce another table and I feel like I’m looking at gibberish most of the time.
  • This college selection process is exhausting because my son is obstinate. He is placing too much importance on the proximity to his sophomore girlfriend. My boss keeps telling me to get him a dog and a jar of peanut butter. He also tells me that is what he’s buying Mason for Christmas.
  • Speaking of Christmas, I have already purchased a few gifts. The tree will have presents under it next weekend when I decorate. I’m looking forward to the sparkle and lights.
  • We are just a little over 6 months from the wedding. I have the venue, photographer, dress, shoes, officiant, and florist. Everything else will fall into place after the first of the year. I can’t wait to be Mrs. Mason. Mason can’t wait to hear me say, “love, honor, and obey*.” I added the asterisk because we all know how well I take direction. 😁

I won a book! I’m attending Leadercast today, and this was one of the morning’s speakers. I hope it’s a good read.

I’m so tired of working the second job. I applied for a manager position at my current job and hoped I would get it and a raise so I could quit the retail gig. I didn’t get it. The notification said the position had been cancelled, so I’m not sure if they actually changed their minds about creating the new role or if they hired someone else.

I’ll sit down to pay bills tonight. I’m around 25% through my debt. I started saving for the wedding last month. I debated between putting everything to debt for a few more months, but I want to make sure I have my share saved and I will have to start dress shopping soon.

I feel like I’m missing out on so much. I’m in a three day stretch of time off from the 2nd job. Tonight I’m going to tackle my filthy house and spend some time with my son.

I’m actually excited about cleaning. I must be losing my mind.

IT careers aren’t just for men

As I sat in a kickoff meeting for our Spring DR exercise, I realized I was one of only two women in the room. There were approximately 30 men in the room. That’s a 15:1 ratio.

Please encourage your daughters to pursue STEM careers.

They are changing the logo and tagline at my company. I can’t share it with you, but I’m pretty sure someone in our marketing department is overpaid. Imagine if Frosted Flakes changed from “They’re great!” to “They’re super!” That is essentially the type of change we are talking about here. The new tagline is less eloquent and the font looks like the handwriting of a teacher (no disrespect to teachers intended). I’m pretty sure someone came up with this hungover at 8:00 am before they had to present it at 8:30 am. So the company will spend lots of money changing the branding at over a thousand locations because someone mailed in an idea while hungover and an exec thought it was a good idea. I present to you, ladies and gentlemen, corporate America.

I started working a second part time job at a department store at the end of September. I am working 29 hours there this week on top of my regular 40 hour job. I commute an hour each way.

I’m heading to the break room now for a mountain dew. I need all the caffeine.

They moved me to a new cubicle at work. It’s right next to a conference room (hello loud conference calls) and everything is reversed from my old cubicle. They moved my work husband’s group to a different floor. My boss retired in October, so there’s...

They moved me to a new cubicle at work. It’s right next to a conference room (hello loud conference calls) and everything is reversed from my old cubicle. They moved my work husband’s group to a different floor. My boss retired in October, so there’s also a new boss. Everything is different and I don’t like it.

Now that the pity party is over, I will say that at least I have more window view from this cubicle. It is also farther from the break room and rest room, so I will get more steps in the day. I may not like change, but at least I can look for the silver linings.

Death to the intern

The intern who sits in the cubicle behind me needs to be shot. He just reheated sauerkraut for lunch and is eating it at his desk. He should know you only heat up stinky foods in the main floor break room.

My manager requested that everyone on the team receive a third monitor. They just installed it. I’m waiting on a power strip so I have more reach to rearrange my desk. I don’t even know what I am going to do with a third monitor.

Don’t you love the reminder on the desktop that it’s a work computer and you are being monitored? We can’t change our desktop background. It’s locked down. Big brother is always watching.

@mistakinglyme - That colleague is my work husband. Many of our conversations are not work appropriate. His wife works in a different department. I eat lunch with him almost daily and she joins us when she can. Mason and I have also hung out with them outside of work. Yes, inappropriate for work, but not given the relationship. I should probably just call him work husband from now on to avoid confusion.

SMH

I explain to the help desk that the secure print feature isn’t working on the Xerox for at least three different people, but direct print is working, so the machine probably just needs a power cycle, but I called them because the options for a soft power cycle aren’t on the menu (because security) and I didn’t want to hard power it off, so I am calling in the problem so they can do a soft restart. He then proceeds to ask for my asset tag to remote into my machine to check my settings. Now I’m on hold while he does more research.

Truth

My dotted line boss has a way of looking at me and sighing or just looking at me at times when I approach his cube that just makes me turn away, go back to my desk, and eat my emergency chocolate stash because I don’t know why he hates me even though I know he doesn’t hate me, but I think he feels like he just got stuck with me and I’m just going to sit in my cube the rest of the day and listen to music and hide from everyone except for the 2 pm meeting with him and part of the team which I guess I have to attend since I scheduled it.

I brought in glazed donuts today with vampire teeth and m&m eyes. I don’t think anyone else found them as humorous as I did.

Wednesday. Smile. Act like you want to be here.

They let a few people go yesterday as part of the ongoing consolidation of the two companies and cost cutting (revenues are not performing as expected). More employees were impacted at another location than at this one. The boss called me in to inform me of the actions and to assure me that I should not be concerned.

I went to a networking event last night. I didn’t really network. I found a table with someone I knew and stayed there the whole time. Other people came and went. I spoke to four people not from my company.

My son was his usual self last night.

I have a lunch with the boss and two managers today. Smile. Nod politely. Listen more than you speak.

I’m not cooking tonight. Executive decision made before I even left the house this morning.

I need more coffee.

I lied to the plant lady

Remember that plant I threw away a few weeks ago? I saw the plant lady today and she asked if I took it home. I lied and said I took it home to repot it and just left it at home.

When I got back to my desk, I had a text from my colleague, “Liar! You threw it away.”

Busted. At least the plant lady doesn’t know I murdered it.
